Berlin is the capital city of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, Berlin is Germany's largest city and is the second most populous city proper and the eighth most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has 5.9 million residents from over 190 nations.
After World War II, the city became divided into East Berlin—the capital of East Germany—and West Berlin, a West German exclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989). Following German reunification in 1990, the city regained its status as the capital of Germany, hosting 147 foreign embassies.
The first U-Bahn (Subway) line was opened in 1902 with the current network of 10 Lines, 220 Stations and 197.8 km in length of which 117.8 km are below ground.
The BVG has a variety of Tickets and Fares and these can be purchased at over 450 Retail Outlets as well as at Ticket Dispensing Machines at all Subway Stations. Day Tickets valid for all Zones from Monday thru Friday from 9am through to 3am the following day. On Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays the ticket is valid all day until 3am the following day. The Price is 6.80 Euros (US$ 8.50). A Single Fare Tickets for all Zones is 3.00 Euros (US$ 3.75).
For Visitors there are a variety of Berlin Welcome Cards for all Zones from 48 hours (19.90 Euros/US$25.00) to 5 days (35.90 Euros/US$45.00)
